Joel is an essential part of the firm’s leadership team and possesses a broad background in public accounting. He became a Partner in January 2019. Prior to joining Milhouse & Neal, LLP in 2003, he gained valuable experience working with two of the Big Four accounting firms, KPMG and Arthur Andersen. This opportunity afforded him the ability to be able to work with international firms and large national accounts across various industries.

Joel obtained a Master of Accountancy from the University of Missouri – Columbia. He is a licensed CPA and exceeds the annual requirements of the Continuing Professional Education program of the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants. He is a member of the Missouri Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He was also served as Past Treasurer for Build – St. Louis a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and revitalization of the unique culture of St. Louis.

He specializes in providing tax planning and consulting services to closely held businesses and successful individuals in a broad range of industries. His background and personal interests have drawn him to the real estate development industry and the majority of Joel’s clients are within the real estate sphere, ranging from small landlords to premier developments. He has developed a niche within our practice assisting developers and rehabbers procure federal and Missouri income tax credits and has assisted in projects generating over $5,000,000 in such credits to date.

Joel possesses a professional style and has strong diverse technical qualifications and an extensive background in business, tax, accounting and finance. He is also vastly experienced in forecasting, budgeting, planning, financial analysis, auditing, reporting, business practices, and a variety of tax and general accounting issues.

Helping clients navigate through the tax code is a challenge he enjoys. Joel’s strengths include his critical thinking and problem solving to bring his client’s the most advantageous tax result. He finds it satisfying to be able to clarify the issues and recommend a course of action. He is committed to delivering accounting services that meet the specific needs of each of his clients. With a thoughtful approach, he consistently provides professional and proficient expertise.

Joel is an all-around leader and dedicated mentor. He is currently responsible for managing and training a team of professionals and is very committed to their success. He leads by example and is known for being a visionary. He has contributed in identifying areas of needed improvement and has assisted in implementing “best practice” solutions.

Joel has a love for the great outdoors and enjoys many outdoor recreational activities which include exploring the region’s national and state parks. On weekends, you might find him in a local campground, fly fishing on his favorite rivers and streams, or kayaking with his young daughter. He is also an avid mountain biker and loves exploring bike trails with his friends.
